Grantchester premiered to more than 5 million viewers last night (October 6), according to overnight figures.
ITV's new detective drama series averaged 5.24m (24.1%) in the 9pm hour, with a further 535k (3.6%) tuning in on +1.
Earlier on ITV, The Undriveables took 2.45m (11.1%) from 8pm.
On BBC One, Panorama was watched by 3.1m (13.9%) from 8.30pm. It was followed by the latest episode of New Tricks, which appealed to 4.8m (22.1%).
BBC Two's University Challenge managed 2.63m (12%) from 8pm, before Only Connect attracted 1.87m (8.4%). New series The Kitchen served 931k (4.3%) from 9pm.
On Channel 4, Jamie's Comfort Food treated 1.18m (5.4%) from 8pm, and Gadget Man had 1.03m (4.6%) from 8.30pm.
Channel 5's Ultimate Police Interceptors grabbed 817k (3.7%) in the 8pm slot. Too Tough to Teach? was watched by 461k (2.1%) afterwards.
On the multichannels, Resurrection attracted 139k (0.6%) on Watch from 9pm.
