Strictly appeals to 8.2 million viewers on Saturday evening

Strictly Come Dancing topped primetime television last night (September 27) with more than eight million viewers, according to overnight figures.

The BBC One dancing competition earned 8.18m (39%) from 7pm, with Doctor Who episode 'The Caretaker' taking 4.89m (21.8%) afterwards.

Casualty continued with 3.98m (20%) from 9.15pm, before The National Lottery Live had 3.04m (16.7%).

ITV's The X Factor managed 7.34m (32.3%) from 8pm, with a further 514k (2.6%) tuning in on +1. ITV2's The Xtra Factor was watched by 543k (2.7%) from 9.20pm.

Elsewhere on ITV, The Chase attracted 3.39m (16.9%) in the 7pm hour and Through the Keyhole interested 3.23m (16.9%) from 9.20pm.

On BBC Two, Restoring England's Heritage netted 641k (3.3%) from 7pm, and The Culture Show was seen by 483k (2.3%) from 7.30pm. Highlights of the Ryder Cup appealed to 1.72m (8.4%) from 8.30pm.

Channel 4 aired Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña drama End of Watch to 451k (2.6%) from 9.15pm.

Mel Gibson's war drama The Patriot was watched by 678k (3.7%) from 8.30pm on Channel 5.

On the multichannels, Boardwalk Empire continued with 79k (0.4%) from 9pm on Sky Atlantic.
