The Great British Bake Off made a final splash in Britain's TV calendars last night for a Christmas special.

Some 3.52m - a 15.6% share of the audience - watched a 'Christmas Masterclass' edition of the hit BBC Two baking show hosted by Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry.

Back in October, the third series finale peaked in an unexpected all-time high of 7.2m, fuelling speculation that the next run will be promoted to BBC One.

Even Tuesday's 'Masterclass' edition finished second in the 8pm hour, predictably losing out to BBC One's Holby City but trumping ITV1's Inside Guinness World Records, which attracted 1.86m (8.2%).

Yesterday's third episode of The Last Tango in Halifax picked up an extra 200,000 viewers compared to last week in averaging 6.21m (26.8%), matching BBC One's premiere audience for the six-part romantic drama.

Meanwhile, 5 grabbed impressive figures for Murder Files (1.2m/5.3%) and Body of Proof (1.33m/5.7%), while Embarrassing Bodies was Channel 4's most-watched broadcast of the night with 1.07m (4.4%) at 8pm (+1: 176k).

Overall, BBC One was the clear leader in the terrestrial primetime battle with 24.7%, thrashing ITV1's 10.4% (+1: 0.5%) and BBC Two's 9.2%. Channel 5 edged Channel 4 into fourth place with 4.4% (+1: 0.3%) versus 4.1% (+1: 0.7%).

A You've Been Framed repeat, unusually scheduled at 9pm by ITV2, dented Don't Tell the Bride as the clip show logged 852k (5.7%) and topped the multichannel ratings while the BBC Three hit fell to 747k (3.2%) at the same time.
