'The Snowmen' will retain the sci-fi drama's traditional December 25 slot, airing at 5.15pm on BBC One in the UK.

ITV has scheduled You've Been Framed Christmas and an episode of Emmerdale up against the hour-long special.

The episode - written by Who showrunner Steven Moffat - will reintroduce new companion actress Jenna-Louise Coleman, following her surprise cameo in this year's 'Asylum of the Daleks'.

Matt Smith - who will be starring in his third Who Christmas special - recently claimed that his Doctor is "attracted" to Coleman's character Clara.

"What's interesting with a new companion is that it changes the way he is and affects his personality," Smith said. "I think, in one way or another, the Doctor is always attracted to his companion and he's certainly taken by this striking young lady."

Richard E Grant (Withnail & I) and Tom Ward (Silent Witness) will also appear in 'The Snowmen' - Doctor Who's eighth Christmas special since its revival in 2005.
