Now into its 11th series, Dara O'Briain's topical round-up was seen by 2.13m (10.7%) at 10pm, 100k higher than 2011's summer opener.

Unlike last year however, Mock the Week benefited from a strong lead-in of 1.98m (8.5%), from the first edition of lifestyle documentary The Men Who Made Us Fat.

Springwatch was just about the channel's most-watched show of the evening with 2.14m (9.2%) in the 8pm hour.

Extraordinary People (1.58m/6.8%) and Big Brother (1.54m/8.4%) performed well for Channel 5 in the 9pm and 10pm slots, while Marco Pierre White's Kitchen Wars slipped to 708k (3.1%) earlier on.

At Channel 4, Country House Rescue attracted 1.37m (5.9%) at 8pm (+1: 251k/1.1%), The House the 50s Built logged 1.18m (5%) at 9pm (+1: 235k/1.3%), and 24 Hours in A&E rounded off the night with just 889k (5%).

Overall, ITV1 led primetime with 24.3% (+1: 0.3%), beating BBC One's 16.6%. BBC Two earned third place with 8.3%, ahead of Channel 4 and Channel 5's 4.8%. Channel 4 had a share of 0.8% on its timeshift channel, compared to Channel 5's 0.2%.

On the multichannels, The Big Bang Theory fell to 576k (2.5%) at 8pm (+1: 154k/0.6%) on E4's US comedy night, while How I Met Your Mother amused 502k (2.1%) at 8.30pm (+1: 184k/0.8%) and Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23 hooked 412k (1.8%) at 9.30pm (+1: 240k/1.5%).

Surprisingly, 2 Broke Girls has steamed ahead to become the most popular show in the lineup, grabbing 514k (2.2%) and 320k (1.6%) on E4 +1.
