The Thick of It's Tony Roche will pen the 90-minute piece, entitled Holy Flying Circus, which will star Darren Boyd as John Cleese and Charles Edwards as Michael Palin.

Holy Flying Circus - named after the group's BBC sketch show Monty Python's Flying Circus - will also feature Steve Punt as Eric Idle, Rufus Jones as Terry Jones, Tom Fisher as Graham Chapman and Phil Nichol as Terry Gilliam.

BBC Four controller Richard Klein said in a statement: "This is a smart and witty take on both the nature of censorship and the world of Monty Python.

"Tony Roche's script is both bold and entertaining, a wonderfully warm homage to one of the most original of British comedy teams."
