Plea to find new homes for abandoned kittens

Image

These adorable little kittens were dumped at a Coventry charity shop and are in need of a new home.

Staff at the Coventry Cats Protection charity shop, in Far Gosford Street, were shocked to find the dozen little balls of fur in a cardboard box left by the till last week.

The kittens, aged between five and seven weeks, are now being cared for by one of the charity’s fosterers – but the discovery was soon followed by even more kittens being abandoned.

A litter of four kittens, aged about five weeks, were left dumped on the doorstep of one of the charity’s fosterers in a cardboard box.

Then another six-month-old kitten, which is in season, was found outside the house of another fosterer, again in a cardboard box.

The new kittens have pushed the Coventry branch’s capacity to breaking point and Cats Protection are now looking for families who may be able to give one or more of the kittens a new home.

Rachael Thompson, homing manager at Coventry Cats Protection, said: “Someone had clearly been watching the charity shop when those ones were dumped as the staff went outside to get more stock and when they came back the box was there. They thought someone had brought some bric-a-brac in, but then the box started moving.

“There were two different litters of kittens aged between five and seven weeks.

“We are already inundated and struggling with room – we have never had this many dumped in one go before.

“There are ways for people to get help if they need it and they can call our helpline or visit the website to find out more.”

The charity is holding a kitten rehoming event at Earlsdon Methodist Church on August 2 from 2pm to 4pm. To find out more call the Cats Protection helpline on 024 7625 1491, or visit http://www.cats.org.uk/coventry.

Cat charity is urging animal lovers to help

AN ANIMAL charity has been left struggling to cope as they are asked to help 50 cats in a month.

Cats in Need, which is based in the Nuneaton and Hinckley area, is appealing to animal lovers to give a home to a feline friend.

This comes as the charity reaches full capacity - but is still being asked to help more and more moggies in need.

With just 12 foster carers, residents across the borough and in Hinckley are being urged to help by re-homing an animal or fostering one until it finds a new home.

Jane Grundy, fostering and homing co-ordinator, said: " The number of cats that we're getting calls about is just phenomenal.

"In one month we've been asked for help with 50 cats. We're a very small organisation, there's just 12 of us, and we're at full capacity with 42 cats at the minute.

"The waiting list is getting longer and longer and we haven't got enough fosterers to cope."

Miss Grundy, who is from Nuneaton and has been involved with the charity for 15 years, said that part of the problem is that most people choose to re-home a kitten rather than an older cat.

She added: "We've got quite a few long term cats. This means that we can't take on as many new cats while they're in our care."

The charity is appealing to people who are thinking of getting a new pet to consider re-homing one of their five long-term cats.

Lucky is four-years-old and was made homeless after his owner's rented accommodation was sold.

He is quite shy at first and needs an experienced home where he can be given time to settle in. He has been with the charity for almost 18 months.

Fluff and Spot are another pair of long-term cats who have been with the charity for 18 months. They are mother and son aged 11 and nine and were made homeless after a house move.

They need a home together as Spot is a little nervous and is more confident with Fluff around.

Jess, thought to be around five or six-years-old, was a stray who arrived at the charity in a poor condition with a matted coat and bad teeth. She has slight brain damage which makes her a little wobbly on her back legs and she is totally deaf. She is described as a lovely, happy girl who loves people but hates other cats.

Finally Tizzy is a beautiful, friendly young cat and has never been homed since arriving at the charity over a year ago as a 14-week-old kitten.

Anyone who can offer a home to any of the cats or would like to find out more about becoming a foster carer for the charity is asked to contact Miss Grundy by emailing grundy451@btinternet.com

Cute cats dumped outside Coventry vets on freezing cold morning

Image

These adorable cats were found dumped in the car park of Coventry vets.

The pair were discovered in a cat carrier by staff at Medivet, in Binley Road, Stoke, on Wednesday morning and Coventry Cat Protection are now searching to find them a new home.

Rachael Thompson, Coventry Cat Protection’s rehoming officer, said: “They were found on Wednesday morning when it was freezing cold.

“The cats are two little boys, aged about 18 months, and we need to get them a home and cartse don’t want to split them up.

They look like brothers and very well could be.

“We have had them both vaccinated, microchipped and neutered as well.”

Anyone interested in giving the pair a home can call 024 7625 1491, leave message and a volunteer will call them back or visit http://www.cats.org.uk/coventry for more information.

Meet Rugby’s cat with ‘thumbs’

Image

A fun-loving kitten has been using his ‘thumbs’ to climb his owner’s curtains at his Rugby home.

Jasper has a condition called polydactylia, meaning he was born with extra toes on his paws.

Cats normally have 18 toes - five on each front paw and four on each back paw - but Jasper was born with 22 toes in total.

He has six toes on each front paw and five on each back paw.

The condition is reasonably rare in ordinary cats like Jasper, but can be more common in breeds such as the Pixie Bob.

Jasper’s owner said he is an expert climber who uses his extra toes to climb up her curtains.

Felix the cat gets head stuck in Whiskas tin

Image

A hungry cat called Felix was rescued from a Whiskas tin in a calamitous mash-up of cat food brands.

The former stray, believed to be about five months old, was scavenging in a neighbour's bin in Bedworth when he got his head stuck in the metal can.

Felix bears an uncanny resemblance to the cartoon moggy used to advertise the cat food of the same name.

But vets had to rescue him from his metal mishap, stuck head first in a tin containing rival Whiskas meat.

Owner Sam Wellbank, 34, called Felix in for his breakfast and was greeted by the distressing sight.

"I heard a clatter as Felix jumped over the fence into the garden and when I looked outside, he was sat on the grass with the food can stuck fast on his head," she said.

"We picked him up but he was very stressed and trying to claw us. He was meowing loudly and was obviously in a lot of discomfort."

Image

She rushed him to the PDSA's Pet Hospital in Coventry where he was taken into surgery and freed from his tin trap.

Felix suffered a cut to his ear and had a high temperature after surgery.

Veterinary nurse Debbie Evans, who admitted Felix, said staff were concerned he could suffocate if the can was not removed, and warned people to take care when leaving cans and glasses out for recycling.

"The sharp edges on tins and glass cause obvious risks to pets and wildlife, so we'd recommend keeping recycling covered or enclosed, if at all possible," she said.

Purrr-fect ending for kittens found abandoned in Warwickshire

Image
Kittens Tinkerbell and Tom with new owners Lauren Young (left) and Poppy Carroll.

It’s a purrr-fect ending for a pair of kittens after they were found abandoned in Warwickshire and finally adopted by the nurses that saved their lives.

Tinkerbell and Tom were rescued by veterinary nurses, Lauren Young and Poppy Carroll, who took their duties to the next level to act a surrogate mothers to the tiny kittens.

Student nurse Lauren, who works at the Southam branch of Avondale Veterinary Centre, adopted 12-week-old Tinkerbell after she was found at an airfield at just one day old.

Lauren has taken Tinkerbell to the surgery with her every day, as well as teaching her how to use a litter tray and helps regulate her temperature.

Tom was found hiding under a tomato plant at Ryton Garden Centre with his brother. Sadly Tom was the only cat to survive.

At six-weeks-old, he is now thriving under the care of Poppy.

Both kittens have had to be bottle fed every two hours, even through the night.

Poppy said: “Tom is six weeks old now and is doing extremely well. He comes everywhere with me – the rugby club, the supermarket, out to dinner and even to work. The team at the surgery have all bonded with him.”

Soon the kittens will receive their primary vaccinations making them ready to explore the outside world.

Abandoned cats overwhelm Coventry charity

Image

A Coventry cat rescue charity says it had to close its doors after being inundated with abandoned cats and kittens.

Coventry Cat Group, which is run entirely by volunteers, can accommodate 100 cats at its centre on Harvest Hill Lane, and in foster homes. However, they say they are now at capacity and turning away stray animals on a daily basis.

Pat Whitehouse, from the charity, said she believed the reasons for the sudden rise in abandoned animals was a combination of hardship and ignorance.

"Most cats aren't intentionally stray, it's just that they are victims of society," she said.
