Fantastic Four might have bombed out at the US box office this weekend, but the beleaguered superhero film has managed to overcome bad buzz and secure a small victory in the UK.

The Josh Trank-directed blockbuster opened with a £2.6 million haul to secure the box office top spot ahead of Tom Cruise's Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation.

However, the total falls some way behind matching the success of the previous incarnation in the Fox/Marvel franchise. Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer topped the chart with £4.1 million in 2007, while 2005's Fantastic Four debuted to a £3.5 million opening weekend.

Elsewhere in this week's chart, Joel Edgerton's thriller The Gift was a new entry at number five after taking in £584,552.

The UK box office top ten in full:
1. (-) Fantastic Four - £2,686,176
2. (1) Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation - £2,408,562
3. (2) Inside Out - £1,957,627
4. (3) Southpaw - £793,255
5. (-) The Gift - £584,552
6. (4) Ant-Man - £565,319
7. (5) Minions - £516,174
8. (8) Empire Strikes Back (Secret Cinema) - £261,750
9. (6) Jurassic World - £178,441
10. (Re) Amy - £85,725
