Asif Kapadia's Amy has achieved the highest-grossing opening weekend by a British documentary at the UK box office.

The film, which focuses on the life of late singer Amy Winehouse, has so far taken £520,528.

Amy's opening weekend is the UK's second biggest for a non-concert documentary - only Michael Moore's 2004 documentary Fahrenheit 9/11 opened bigger - and fifth biggest documentary opening ever.

Mark Ronson recently said that he finds Kapadia's documentary to be "respectful" of its subject, following controversy over its use of interview footage.

Amy's father Mitch Winehouse branded the finished movie a "disgrace" and told the filmmakers they should be "ashamed" of how they edited his comments.

Kapadia himself claimed that he didn't start off as a fan of the singer when making the picture.

The UK box office top ten in full:
1. (1) Minions - £6,238,498
2. (-) Terminator Genisys - £3,793,617
3. (2) Jurassic World - £2,610,612
