Coventry city centre to be "blown up" for horror film

Flesh-eating zombies and jet fighters will destroy Coventry city centre as a deadly virus causes post-apocalyptic mayhem in the city.



Fortunately for shoppers and office workers, the disaster is a fictional one created by a movie company filming a new horror flick.

Halogen Entertainment, based in Coventry, is currently filming its fourth production called Immune.

The film is set in Coventry, nine months after a deadly virus caused by a pesticide wiped out 98 per cent of the population.

Of those remaining, half are zombies and half are immune.

The movie has a budget of £180,000 and over 100 people are involved in the film-making process which will include some spectacular special effects.

Paul Bedder, one of the film’s producers, said: “We have a helicopter crashing into the spire at St Michael’s, we’re blowing up the cathedral and we’re exploding the Council House with a gas leak.”

Aside from the computer-generated effects, visitors to Broadgate can expect a shock later in the year when the film-makers plan to flood the square with zombies for one of their scenes.

Studio filming is also taking place tomorrow evening at the Ego centre off Silver Street.

Mr Bedder added: “The film has been a lot of fun, the people involved are just terrific. We’re very pleased with this one.

“The budget means we have to work quickly and efficiently, there’s no money for mistakes.

“We have had equipment supplied to us and our executive producers, Robin Crane and Liam Smith, have invested heavily in production.”

This will be the fourth film produced by Halogen and follows drama Change for a Shilling, which was shown at last year’s Coventry Film Festival.

Mr Bedder said the company ultimately hoped to establish Coventry as a centre for film-making and that their planned big-budget sixth film, a period drama, could help establish the city on the movie stage.

He added: “It’s about encouraging employment and giving the city a different industry. Our long term aim is to have a film and TV studio here.”

As well as Mr Bedder, Immune has two more producers – Allen Margrett and Michael Trott.

The film is directed by Steven Tayler and is set to be first screened during Coventry Film Festival in April next year.

The movie is scheduled for full release in September 2016.
