The cost of a night out at the cinema is putting people off visiting, according to a new study.

A recent YouGov poll questioning more than 5,000 people found that on average a filmgoer will spend £7.85 on top of the price of their ticket.

The price of food, drink and parking hits families harder, with an average of £9.76 extra being spent by families with two children and £11.96 for film fans with three kids.

A YouGov study, which questioned more than 5,000 people, found the average moviegoer spent £7.85 on top of their ticket with most of that money going on food, drink and parking.

The figures get worse for families, with film fans with two children spending £9.76 on average and those with three children forking out £11.96.

Of the people who said they did not go to the cinema, 46% blamed the high cost, while 30% said that on-demand options allowed them to watch the movies they want in their own homes.

YouGov's Vidisha Gaglani said that illegal downloading was among the reasons why people were avoiding the cinema.

"Piracy and torrents of new movies are rife, television has arguably never laid down such a cinematic challenge, and squeezed film financing has led to more sequels and arguably less variety," she explained.

"While cost keeps many people away from the pictures, it should be remembered that people go to the cinema because of the experience as much as they do because it is a practical way to see a film.

"While some of this is due to the screen size and ambience, a large part of this can be attributed to the novelty of snacks like popcorn and hot dogs that are associated with the cinema experience."

Wow! It took a study to find the blindingly obvious!
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.
