'The Hobbit' takes UK box-office No.1 slot

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies has debuted at the top of the UK box office chart.



The final instalment in Peter Jackson's trilogy has knocked Paddington from the number 1 position, taking £9,753,642 over the weekend.

Paddington - which has earned over £14 million since its opening in late November - fell to second place, knocking The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 into third, animated spinoff Penguins of Madagascar into fourth and Alan Turing biopic The Imitation Game into fifth.

The third Hunger Games film Mockingjay: Part 1 took £1,089,989 over the weekend, bringing its total gross to over £27 million since its November 21 release.

Disney animation Tinkerbell and the Legend of the NeverBeast was the only other new entry in the chart at seven, with a gross of £395,454.

Bill Murray comedy St Vincent and Jude Law's Black Sea slipped from the chart after only one week.
