Hollywood actress Lauren Bacall dies, aged 89

Lauren Bacall has passed away at the age of 89.

The iconic Hollywood actress and model - who famously starred with and married Humphrey Bogart - suffered a stroke at her Manhattan, New York home on Tuesday morning (August 12).

The Humphrey Bogart Estate announced on its Facebook page: "With deep sorrow for the magnitude of our loss, yet with great gratitude for her amazing life, we confirm the passing of Lauren Bacall."

Bacall, who was known for her husky voice and sultry looks, was born in the Bronx, New York in 1924. She got her break at the age of 19 in the 1944 thriller To Have and Have Not.

She also appeared in the movies How to Marry a Millionaire (1953) with Marilyn Monroe, Designing Woman (1957) with Gregory Peck and The Mirror Has Two Faces (1996), which earned her a Golden Globe Award and an Academy Award nomination.

Bacall and Bogart starred in Key Largo in 1948. They married in 1945 and were together until his death in 1957.

She later married Jason Robards in 1961 and the couple divorced in 1969.

In 2009, Bacall was selected by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to receive an Academy Honorary Award "in recognition of her central place in the Golden Age of motion pictures".

The actress had two children with Bogart, Stephen and Leslie, and one child with Jason, Sam.
