Transformers: Age of Extinction won the battle of the sequels at the UK box office over the weekend.

Michael Bay's robot blockbuster earned more than £11.7 million to hold off competition from How to Train Your Dragon 2 and secure first place.

Transformers posted the biggest opening of 2014 in the UK, but had the benefit of a nine-day opening after debuting on a Saturday (July 5) and not being eligible for last week's chart.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 has already been on release in Scotland and Ireland for two weeks, but expanding nationwide it racked up an impressive £7.7 million - a significant uptick from the £4.8 million earned by its predecessor when it opened in 2010.

Elsewhere in the week's chart, musical drama Begin Again debuted at number five with £456,438 and Richard Linklater's highly praised Boyhood secured seventh place with £312,747.

The UK box office top ten in full:
1. (-) Transformers: Age of Extinction - £11,751,427
