The Fault in Our Stars hits big at UK box office

The Fault in Our Stars has topped the box office on its opening weekend on release.



Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort's romantic drama has already struck a chord with audiences Stateside, and has replicated its success with audiences across UK and Ireland.

The film, which has already earned more than $160 million (£94 million) from the worldwide box office, added £3.4 million to its running total after releasing in the UK on June 19.

The adaptation of John Green's best-selling YA novel charted ahead of last week's number one movie 22 Jump Street and Angelina Jolie-led Disney blockbuster Maleficent.

X-Men: Days of Future Past is in fourth place with £564,649 on its fifth weekend on release. The superhero sequel has now earned £25.7 million from UK cinemas.

Elsewhere, new films from Clint Eastwood and Kevin Costner failed to light up the chart. Eastwood's musical Jersey Boys debuted at number six ahead of the McG-directed 3 Days to Kill at number seven.

Bollywood release Humshakals charted at number ten with £129,181.
