Rio 2 has topped the UK cinema chart on its debut weekend on release.
The Blue Sky Studios animated sequel, posting earnings of £2.8 million (up on the £1.5 million haul of its 2011 predecessor), won a highly-competitive box office battle which saw both Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Noah gross more than £2 million from UK screens.
Divergent, the Shailene Woodley action film, debuted at number four with £1.7 million. The film falls short of fellow YA movies Twilight and The Hunger Games, which debuted to £2.5 million and £4.9 million respectively.
Muppets Most Wanted, down three places from last week's runner-up spot, completes the top five.
Elsewhere, the chart saw new entries for opera broadcast La Boheme and Richard Ayoade's The Double.
