James Cameron has revealed that his record-breaking blockbuster Avatar may get a summer re-release in cinemas.

Asked about a potential 3D Blu-ray home release for the picture, the director told USA Today that it could in fact return to 3D screens with additional footage once Alice In Wonderland's theatrical run is over.

He said: "We're not officially announcing [the Blu-ray] right now but I'm hoping for fall. The wildcard is that we might be re-releasing the movie this fall. It's kind of gotten stomped out because of Alice in Wonderland.

"The word we're getting back from exhibitors is we probably left a couple of hundred million dollars on the table as a result. The question is [whether] the appetite [is] still going to be there after the summer glut of movies. We're going to assess that. We're talking about maybe adding in additional footage and doing something creative."

Cameron also addressed plans to release a 3D version of Titanic in 2012, 15 years after the romantic drama's initial cinema bow and on the 100-year anniversary of the doomed ship sailing from Southampton.
