'Thor: The Dark World' hammers competition at UK box office

Thor: The Dark World has topped the UK box office on its debut weekend on release.



The Marvel sequel, starring Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston, earned £8.6 million to easily beat surge past last week's chart topper Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 and secure first place.

The Dark World's total easily surpasses that of its superhero predecessor, which £5.45 million when it opened in April 2011.

Captain Phillips slips down a place to number three, while Judi Dench and Steve Coogan's Philomena is a new entry at number four.

Dreamworks's animated snail-racer Turbo, featuring the voice talents of Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L Jackson, rounds out the top five.

Elsewhere, Bollywood film Krrish 3 is a new entry at number eight, earning £408,624 from 95 locations.
