Matt Damon and Neill Blomkamp's science fiction blockbuster earned £3.1 million (including previews) to see off competition from Jennifer Aniston's We're The Millers and secure first place.

DisneyToon's Planes, last week's number two movie, slips down a place to three while The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones lands at four with a £1.1 million opening haul.

Kick-Ass 2 suffered a drastic 75% drop in ticket sales to slip down from the chart summit into seventh spot.

Elsewhere, Despicable Me 2 continues to show impressive staying power, climbing up from number ten to 9. The animated sequel has now made more than £43 million at the box office, making it the highest-earning film of 2013 in the UK.
