'The Wolverine' beats 'Monsters University' at UK box office

The Wolverine has topped the UK box office on its first weekend on release.

Hugh Jackman's sixth outing as the Marvel superhero earned £4.6 million to lead the chart ahead of Pixar's Monsters University.

The Wolverine's total falls short of the £6.6 million earned by its direct predecessor X-Men Origins: Wolverine and X-Men: First Class's £5.4 million.

Despicable Me 2 holds its position at number three, while The World's End falls two places to number four. Jesse Eisenberg's Now You See Me rounds out the top five, pushing its UK total to above the £9 million mark.

Elsewhere, the chart sees a new entry from Greta Gerwig's Frances Ha. The indie comedy pulled in £150,689 from 60 locations to land in ninth place.
