The Steve Carell-voiced animated comedy registered the biggest box office opening of 2013 - beating Iron Man 3 and Man of Steel - to take the top spot with £14.8 million including previews.

Despicable Me 2 is a sharp increase on its predecessor, which debuted to £3.66 million in 2010.

Man of Steel and World War Z both fall a spot each to occupy second and third place in the chart, while new releases This Is The End and Hummingbird complete the top five.

Elsewhere, indie releases Behind the Candelabra and Before Midnight showed the smallest drop-off in ticket sales to land at numbers six and nine respectively.
