Avatar has surpassed Mamma Mia! as the all-time top-grossing movie at the UK box office.

James Cameron's space blockbuster pulls in £4.3 million on its eighth week of release to march past the Abba musical's £69 million box office haul. Avatar has now grossed nearly £72 million in the UK since opening in December.

The Princess And The Frog, Disney's return to hand-drawn animation, is in second place after expanding its release outside of London. Animation Astro Boy and Clint Eastwood's Nelson Mandela drama Invictus follow at numbers three and four respectively.

Michael Cera's Youth In Revolt is a new entry at seven, while last week's runner-up Alvin And The Chipmunks: The Squeakquel slides six places to number eight.

This Friday sees the release of The Wolfman, Percy Jackson And The Lightning Thief and Valentine's Day, all of which will be hoping to end Avatar's chart dominance.

The UK box office top ten in full:
1. (1) Avatar - £4,338,774
2. (-) The Princess And The Frog - £2,219,769
3. (-) Astro Boy - £1,091,872
4. (-) Invictus - £1,068,388
5. (4) Sherlock Holmes - £783,681
6. (3) Edge Of Darkness - £768,013
7. (-) Youth In Revolt - £743,932
8. (2) Alvin And The Chipmunks: The Squeakquel - £729,683
9. (5) It's Complicated - £560,573
10. (6) Up In The Air - £481,810

Please note that ticket prices were increased to cover the cost of projecting in 3D so the actual number of tickets sold is still probably less than for Mama Mia!
