Leading lady Streep thanked her fellow nominees and "God" Harvey Weinstein, boss of the film's distributors, after she scooped her eighth globe for her portrayal of former prime minister Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady.

"I just want to thank my agent and God — Harvey Weinstein," Streep said, prompting a burst of laughter and raised eyebrows from the audience.

The best actress winner made the joke at the end of an emotional, off-the-cuff speech — struggling to remember who to thank after forgetting her glasses to read her notes

"The punisher. Old Testament I guess," the actress continued, giggling.

The 62-year-old earlier swore when she realised she had left her glasses at her table.

"Ooooh ----, oh my glasses, I forgot my glasses, now I have to remember my speech," she said.
