Avatar a winner at Empire Awards

3D extravaganza Avatar has been named best film at the Empire Film Awards, which are being held in London.

Its creator, James Cameron, has won the best director prize, a title he missed out on at the Academy Awards.

Other winners include another win for Inglourious Basterds actor Christophe Waltz and a best actress award for Avatar and Star Trek's Zoe Saldana.

Veteran actor Sir Ian McKellan is due to be presented with the Empire Icon award.
