Let's crunch some numbers...

The BBC has released the stats for iPlayer over the Christmas period from December 20 to January 2, and EastEnders has come out on top.

The broadcaster revealed that more content was streamed than ever over the festive period, with December 23, Christmas Day and New Year's Day all having a 25% or more increase in terms of viewership.

The Albert Square soap was ahead of that curve, with this year's big Christmas Day episode up a whopping 61% compared to the previous year, with 2.5 million streams.

When looking at the whole period, EastEnders was the most-streamed programme, with a total of 23.7 million streams, beating out second-placed The Traitors' 12.4 million. These numbers count combined views of all the episodes, and obviously EastEnders has a lot more episodes than its competition.

However, when you look at the BBC's top 20 individual episode stats, 10 of those are EastEnders episodes, with the top seven entries all belonging to the soap. The episodes, airing from December 20 to December 29, had between 1.9 million and 2.5 million views, which is pretty consistent.

In terms of traditional broadcasting, EastEnders wasn't the most-watched programme on Christmas Day (that was Strictly Come Dancing's festive special), but it was the most-watched soap, with more than 3 million tuning in to see Danny Dyer's final scenes as Mick Carter.

Looking ahead, the soap has revealed four stories coming this year, and it seems there's going to be some major heartbreak and tough times ahead for the residents of Walford.
