Waterloo Road's sixth series opener was popular with viewers on Wednesday night, early viewing figures show.
Amanda Burton's arrival as Karen pulled in 5.1m (23.2%) for BBC One between 8pm and 9pm, the highest launch figure ever for the school drama.
However, Emmerdale was easily the most-watched serial of the evening, with 6.46m (34.7%) for Mark Wylde's funeral.
Sinead's mischievous activities in Hollyoaks attracted 1.02m (6%), while E4's first look grabbed 382k (2.1%) at 7pm.
Elsewhere, Neighbours logged 1.07m (8.8%), and Doctors averaged a decent 1.48m (24.2%).
