The ratings are in for Peggy Mitchell's emotional EastEnders send-off - and the Albert Square legend went out on a high.

EastEnders was easily the most-watched show of the day yesterday (May 17), averaging 6.9 million viewers and a strong 37.0% share for Peggy's final episode.

Even more impressively, the Walford soap had an audience peak of 8 million viewers and a 41% share for the episode's closing moments, which saw Peggy chatting to a vision of her old friend Pat Butcher before taking her last breath.

EastEnders aired in an extended 35-minute slot from 7.25pm on Tuesday evening. Heartbroken fans saw Peggy make the decision to end her own life following her recent diagnosis of terminal cancer.

Peggy had assured her sons Phil (Steve McFadden) and Grant (Ross Kemp) that she no longer intended to go through with her plan, but she went ahead and took an overdose of pills in secret while alone at the Mitchell house.

EastEnders continues on Thursday (May 19) at 7.30pm on BBC One, when Phil makes the heartbreaking discovery that Peggy is dead and the news spreads around the rest of the Square.

I didn't! I didn't even know she was still in it.
