Soap ratings: 6.3m see Peggy's shock EastEnders return

Peggy Mitchell's surprise return to EastEnders was seen by 6.3 million viewers on Friday evening (January 15), overnight figures show.

The Walford soap brought in 6.33m (29.6%) at 8pm on BBC One as Peggy made an unexpected reappearance on our screens, breaking the devastating news to Phil that her cancer had returned.

Show bosses have since announced the shock news that Barbara Windsor's iconic character is bowing out from the soap for good.

BBC Three's EastEnders repeat added 369k (2.0%) at 10pm.

Coronation Street was the top-rated programme of the day, claiming 7.19m (35.3%) at 7.30pm on ITV and 69k (0.3%) on +1 as Robert seemed close to exposing Carla's secret. 6.86m (31.7%) returned at 8.30pm and 106k (0.5%) on +1 as Nick was forced to strike a deal with Robert.

Emmerdale attracted 6.24m (31.4%) at 7pm on ITV and 83k (0.4%) on +1 as Paddy and Rhona's adoption plans remained in jeopardy.

Hollyoaks interested 806k (4.2%) at 6.30pm on Channel 4 as Cleo started to fall for Pete's manipulation again (+1: 79k / 0.4%), while E4's first look topped the multichannels with 614k (3.1%) at 7pm and 118k (0.5%) on +1.

Neighbours aired to 744k (9.3%) at 1.45pm and 737k (4.7%) at 5.30pm on Channel 5 as Michelle's fictional assault story became a disturbing reality.

Home and Away managed 246k (3.1%) at 1.15pm and 615k (3.4%) at 6pm on Channel 5, while 5's first look had 406k (2.1%) at 6.30pm.
