Soap ratings: EastEnders soars to 8.3m with lake stunt

EastEnders kicked off 2016 on sparkling form as over 8 million viewers tuned in for the Carter family's New Year drama, overnight figures show.

The Walford soap attracted 8.29m (33.4%) at 8pm on BBC One as an action-packed episode featured Mick and Dean's lake showdown, Dean's arrest and the heartwarming moment that Mick and Linda finally tied the knot.

This was the show's best rating since February 23 last year, when EastEnders was airing the fallout from the 30th anniversary week.

Earlier, the night's first visit to Walford brought in 7.24m (31.5%) in a 6.30pm slot. BBC Three's double bill of repeat screenings had 470k (2.0%) at 10pm and 471k (2.5%) at 10.30pm.

Coronation Street claimed 6.73m (26.7%) at 7.30pm on ITV and 222k (0.9%) on +1 as Robert made a move on Carla, while 6.25m (25.4%) returned at 8.30pm and 290k (1.2%) on +1 as Carla immediately regretted cheating on Nick.

Emmerdale entertained 6.04m (25.3%) at 7pm on ITV and 208k (0.8%) on +1 as Debbie left the village after her difficult week.

The night of soap concluded with The Big Quiz: Coronation Street vs Emmerdale airing to 3.03m (12.1%) at 9pm on ITV and 164k (0.8%) on +1.
