Emmerdale topped Thursday's ratings (October 1) with Lawrence White's shock shooting confession, overnight figures show.

5.56m (28.9%) tuned in at 7pm on ITV and 244k (1.2%) on +1 as the soap's latest hour-long episode saw Lawrence claim responsibility for Robert's shooting in a desperate bid to protect his daughter Chrissie.

Clashing with its ITV rival once again, EastEnders dipped to 4.59m (22.5%) at 7.30pm on BBC One as Max was recaptured by the police in his temporary exit episode.

During the 30-minute clash period itself from 7.30pm, Emmerdale had 5.31m (26.1%). BBC Three's EastEnders repeat screening secured 590k (3.5%) at 10pm.

Hollyoaks continued with 688k (4.0%) at 6.30pm on Channel 4 as Cindy discovered the Gloved Hand Killer's secret hideaway (+1: 55k / 0.3%). E4's first look followed with 470k (2.6%) at 7pm and 132k (0.7%) on +1.

Doctors interested 1.27m (22.9%) at 1.45pm on BBC One as Al made his final decision over his app.

Neighbours entertained 610k (10.8%) at 1.45pm and 560k (4.4%) at 5.30pm on Channel 5 as Piper settled into Erinsborough.

Home and Away managed 207k (3.6%) at 1.15pm and 466k (3.0%) at 6pm on Channel 5, while 5*'s first look had 324k (1.9%) at 6.30pm.
