Dan's revenge is seen by 7.4m on Monday's Coronation Street

Coronation Street topped a strong evening for each of the big four soaps on Monday (July 20), overnight figures show.

Corrie was the most-watched programme of the day, bringing in 7.05m (33.4%) at 7.30pm on ITV and 256k (1.2%) on +1 as Dan took his revenge by holding Leanne, Liz and Simon captive. The audience increased to 7.43m (34.2%) at 8.30pm and 244k (1.2%) on +1 as the frightening situation continued.

Notably, the ITV soap's 8.30pm airing was only down 100k on the 7.53m who tuned in for Deirdre Barlow's emotional funeral last week.

EastEnders also had a good night, rising to 6.8m (31.3%) at 8pm on BBC One with the aftermath of Ben's surprise arrest for Lucy's murder - the show's best figure since May 18. BBC Three's repeat had 441k (2.5%) at 10pm.

Emmerdale claimed its highest rating since June 1 as Laurel's grief at her mum's funeral was seen by 6.02m (30.4%) at 7pm on ITV and 175k (0.8%) on +1.

Hollyoaks' special Six Weeks of Summer storylines got off to a decent start, with 863k (4.8%) tuning in at 6.30pm on Channel 4 for the Gloved Hand Killer's visit to Esther (+1: 84k / 0.4%) - the show's best figure since June 1.

E4's Hollyoaks first look followed with its best performance since May 18 as 705k (3.6%) watched at 7pm (+1: 98k / 0.5%), which was the top-rated multichannel programme of the day.

Neighbours entertained 637k (8.2%) at 1.45pm and 580k (4.1%) at 5.30pm on Channel 5 as Tyler agreed to go undercover to bring down Dimato.

Home and Away managed 241k (3.1%) at 1.15pm and 455k (2.7%) at 6pm on Channel 5, while 5*'s first look followed with 286k (1.6%) at 6.30pm.

Elsewhere, Doctors returned from its three-week break with 682k (8.9%) at 1.45pm, airing on BBC Two in a last-minute schedule change.
