EastEnders: New Year aftermath seen by 7.8m on Tuesday

EastEnders topped Tuesday evening's soap ratings (January 6) with the continued aftermath of Albert Square's dramatic New Year's Day, overnight figures show.

The Walford drama was the most-watched show of the day, bringing in 7.79m (35.9%) at 7.30pm on BBC One as news of Phil's arrest shocked the locals and Max continued to grieve for Emma. BBC Three's repeat screening secured a strong 517k (3.7%) at 10.30pm.

Emmerdale attracted 6.29m (30.2%) at 7pm on ITV and 136k (0.6%) on +1 as Cain's health took a worrying turn for the worse.

Holby City rose to its highest rating since January 2014 as 5.09m (23.4%) tuned in at 8pm on BBC One for the Effanga wedding and the latest developments in Zosia's storyline.

Hollyoaks claimed 1.06m (5.3%) at 6.30pm on Channel 4 and 135k (0.6%) on +1 as Tegan decided to flee from the village, while E4's first look increased to its highest figure since November 24 with 876k (4.2%) at 7pm and 141k (0.7%) on +1.

Neighbours was Channel 5's best-rated show of the day, mustering 912k (5.6%) at 5.30pm as Sonya's stalker Erin explained herself. 737k (10.0%) saw the lunchtime screening at 1.45pm.

Home and Away interested 300k (4.0%) at 1.15pm and 635k (3.4%) at 6pm on Channel 5, while 5*'s first look had 411k (2.1%) at 6.30pm.

Elsewhere, Doctors continued with 1.48m (20.3%) at 1.45pm on BBC One.
