EastEnders tops New Year's Day ratings with 8.5m

EastEnders was the most-watched programme on New Year's Day, overnight figures show.

8.53m (32.3%) tuned in at 8.30pm on BBC One for a dramatic hour-long episode which saw Emma Summerhayes confront Lucy Beale's killer, Ronnie Mitchell go into labour on her wedding day and a shock car crash leave lives hanging in the balance.

EastEnders enjoyed its highest rating in almost two years, as it hasn't pulled in a higher figure since January 21, 2013.

BBC Three's repeat screening of EastEnders also performed well with 588k (3.5%) at 10.30pm.

Emmerdale attracted 5.61m (21.8%) at 7.30pm on ITV and 140k (0.5%) on +1 as Lachlan suffered a shock health scare after taking a legal high.

Earlier, another chance to watch Coronation Street documentary Rita and Me was taken up by 1.32m (6.1%) at 5.45pm on ITV.
