Emmerdale beats EastEnders as the two soaps go head-to-head

Emmerdale was Tuesday evening's top-rated soap (October 8) as the Amy and Kyle storyline took a dramatic turn, overnight figures show.

6.84m (33.0%) watched at 7pm on ITV and 233k (1.0%) on +1 as an hour-long episode saw Amy rescue Kyle after he fell into a river.

Unsurprisingly, EastEnders struggled due to its schedule clash with Emmerdale and the rival soap's head start. 4.52m (20.6%) tuned in at 7.30pm on BBC One as Michael and Janine's custody rows continued, but BBC Three's repeat screening later saw a boost with 764k (5.5%) watching at 10.30pm.

Holby City attracted 4.26m (17.9%) at 8pm on BBC One with the dramatic aftermath of Arthur and Chantelle's car crash.

Hollyoaks claimed 1.04m (5.7%) at 6.30pm on Channel 4 as killer Will continued covering his tracks, while E4's first look followed with 610k (3.1%) at 7pm and 136k (0.6%) on +1.

Meanwhile, Hollyoaks Later continued with 382k (2.4%) at 10pm on E4, adding 106k (1.3%) on +1.

Over on Channel 5, Neighbours grabbed 660k (10.2%) at 1.45pm and 809k (5.7%) at 5.30pm, while Home and Away managed 263k (3.9%) at 1.15pm, 625k (3.8%) at 6pm and 477k (2.6%) for 5*'s first look at 6.30pm.

Elsewhere, the latest episode of Doctors interested 1.35m (20.9%) at 1.45pm on BBC One.
