Coronation Street remains on top in Friday's soap ratings

Coronation Street came out on top in Friday's soap ratings (August 23) with Tina and David's showdown, overnight figures show.

7.55m (39.0%) tuned in at 7.30pm on ITV and 206k (1.0%) on +1 as Tina angrily confronted David about the crash, while 7.28m (34.1%) returned at 8.30pm and 306k (1.5%) on +1 as the feisty barmaid threatened to expose the truth.

Emmerdale grabbed 6.12m (34.7%) at 7pm on ITV as Alex's murder was finally revealed to the villagers, adding 187k (0.9%) on +1.

EastEnders interested 6.06m (30.4%) at 8pm on BBC One as Shirley continued to blackmail Phil. BBC Three's repeat screening secured 273k (6.1%) at the later time of 12.35am.

Hollyoaks managed 799k (4.9%) at 6.30pm on Channel 4 as Cindy's fate was revealed, while E4's first look had 419k (2.4%) at 7pm.

Over on Channel 5, Sonya's ordeal in Neighbours was seen by 595k (8.0%) at 1.45pm and 820k (6.5%) at 5.30pm, while another classic airing of Home and Away on 5* appealed to 76k (0.5%) at 6.30pm.

Elsewhere, the latest episode of Doctors brought in 1.3m (17.5%) at 1.45pm on BBC One.
