'EastEnders' tops tough night for soaps on Friday

EastEnders was the most-watched soap on first-run showings on Friday evening (July 5), but it was a low-rating night all round due to the impact of Wimbledon.

The latest visit to Walford, which was pushed back to 9.45pm due to the Andy Murray match, brought 5.57m (26.3%) to BBC One with the aftermath of the accident at Ian's restaurant. BBC Three's repeat screening secured 368k (2.3%).

Elsewhere, the other soaps were dented significantly by tough competition from the BBC's Wimbledon coverage.

Coronation Street interested 5.54m (27.6%) at 7.30pm on ITV and 207k (0.9%) on +1 as David directed his anger towards Gail, while 4.86m (21.3%) returned at 8.30pm and 225k (1.0%) on +1 to see Anna confront Tim over leaving Faye home alone.

Emmerdale appealed to 4.53m (24.5%) at 7pm on ITV as Cameron continued to betray Chas with Debbie, adding 166k (0.8%) on +1.

Hollyoaks managed 495k (3.1%) at 6.30pm on Channel 4 as Joe considered a risky insurance scam, while E4's first look had 392k (2.1%) at 7pm.

On Channel 5, Neighbours entertained 506k (7.4%) at 1.45pm and 629k (4.6%) at 5.30pm, while Home and Away grabbed 206k (3.1%) at 1.15pm, 383k (2.6%) at 6pm and 302k (1.9%) for 5*'s first look at 6.30pm.
