'Coronation Street' tops Wednesday soap ratings

Coronation Street stayed close to the 8m mark on Wednesday evening (October 3) as Maria's cancer scare storyline took centre stage, overnight figures show.

The Weatherfield soap pulled in 7.99m (37.3%) at 7.30pm on ITV1 as Maria confided in Jason about her fears, while also appearing to question their future as a couple. 373k (1.7%) caught the episode an hour later on ITV1+1.

Emmerdale, meanwhile, attracted 6.73m (33.1%) at 7pm and 256k (1.2%) on timeshift as Rishi discovered Jai's secret.

High drama in Hollyoaks continued to boost the show's ratings, as Riley's death brought 1.14m (6.0%) to Channel 4 at 6.30pm and 114k (0.5%) to the +1 screening. E4's first look secured 729k (3.6%) at 7pm and 174k (0.8%) on +1.

Over on Channel 5, Neighbours grabbed 650k (9.4%) at 1.45pm and 886k (6.2%) at 5.30pm, while Home and Away mustered 807k (4.7%) at 6pm and 468k (2.5%) for 5*'s first look at 6.30pm.

Elsewhere, the latest episode of Doctors was seen by 1.45m (20.9%) at 1.45pm on BBC One.
