Coronation Street put in a buoyant performance against the BBC's Olympics coverage last night (Friday).

The Weatherfield soap secured an audience of 6.25m (27.2%) for its tragic hour-long instalment between 7.30pm and 8.30pm.

Without EastEnders airing at 8pm, ITV opted to merge the two half-hour episodes together, which probably boosted the show's ratings.

Build-up to the Olympics opening ceremony was averaging around 9 million at the same time on BBC One.

Emmerdale took 5.17m (27%) at 7pm as Rachel urged Jai to tell Charity the truth about her abortion.

Meanwhile, Hollyoaks logged 616k (3.6%) at 6.30pm, recovering from its all-time low. However, E4's first look slipped further to 319k (1.7%) half an hour later.

Elsewhere, Neighbours attracted an aggregated rating of 1.4m to Channel 5, after grabbing 634k (8.5%) at 1.45pm and adding 770k (6%) at 5.30pm.

Home and Away could only manage 596k (3.8%) for its final episode before its five-week summer break, before 5*'s first look at the next edition in September nabbed 453k (2.7%).
