The Duchess of Cornwall is to follow in her husband's footsteps by treading the cobbles of Coronation Street, it has been announced.

The visit will take place next month to tie in with the Manchester-based programme's 50th anniversary year.

Her visit to ITV Granada's studios will be part of several appointments in her north west of England tour.

The Prince of Wales visited the set in 2000 and also made a guest appearance on the show in a news report.

The Queen also visited the Street in the 1980s.

'Perfect beginning'

Camilla will stroll along the famous cobbles before being presented to Coronation Street creator Tony Warren and cast members, including William Roache, outside the legendary pub, the Rover's Return.

She will also watch a scene being filmed in the pub's interior.

Director of ITV John Whiston, who will also be accompanying Camilla, said: "We are very honoured to be graced by a visit from HRH The Duchess of Cornwall, it's the perfect beginning to our 50th anniversary year."
