'EastEnders' struggles against hour-long 'Emmerdale'

EastEnders lost out to Emmerdale as the two soaps clashed on Thursday evening, overnight figures show.

Emmerdale's hour-long episode pulled in 7.49m (32.6%) from 7pm as Amy gave birth in the village graveyard. The ITV1+1 screening was watched by 206k (0.8%) an hour later.

EastEnders, meanwhile, mustered 5.61m (23.2%) at 7.30pm as Yusef's behaviour towards Zainab took another violent turn, but BBC Three's 10pm repeat screening added a huge 1.77m (8.8%). During the 30-minute clash period from 7.30pm, Emmerdale had 7.53m (31.3%).

Coronation Street was the most-watched soap of the day, attracting 8.05m (32.8%) at 8pm and 302k (1.2%) on +1 as Sophie continued to struggle with her feelings for Amber.

Elsewhere, Hollyoaks interested 1.11m (5.3%) at 6.30pm on Channel 4, while E4's first look screening took 528k (2.4%) at 7pm.

Over on Channel 5, Neighbours appealed to 665k (9.8%) at 1.45pm and 1.11m (6.7%) at 5.30pm, while Home and Away managed 832k (4.3%) at 6pm. 5*'s first look at the Summer Bay soap secured 445k (2.1%) at 6.30pm.

Doctors' latest episode - titled 'Striking Out' - pulled in 1.58m (23.4%) at lunchtime.
