Betty’s hotpot could be as extinct as Ena Sharples’ milk stout if our local pie finds favour in Coronation Street.

Bedworth baker Carl Heer has dished up an ale, steak and stilton pie which is a hot contender to take over from barmaid Betty’s speciality dish on the TV soap.

He entered his recipe in a competition on ITV’s This Morning show to Cook A Dish For Corrie – and it is now among the final three to be judged on screen next week.

“With a bit of luck, my pie could become part of Corrie history,” said 58-year-old Carl, a semi-retired former Coventry publican and store proprietor.

“I have been invited to the ITV studios in London next Monday to watch my pie cooked, along with the other two recipes, by celebrity chef Phil Vickery.
