Over 8m watch 'EastEnders', 'Coronation Street' on Xmas Eve

EastEnders and Coronation Street's key Christmas Eve episodes were each seen by audiences of over 8m, early overnight ratings data indicates.

A 35-minute episode of EastEnders, in which Derek Branning swore to take revenge on brother Max following a row over his attempts to blackmail Tanya, was seen by 8.49 million (32.9%) at 9pm.

The BBC Three repeat at 10.30pm was watched by a further 563,000 (2.6%).

Over on ITV, a one-hour Coronation Street special - showing Peter Barlow trying to win back ex-wife Leanne on the eve of her second marriage to Nick Tilsley - was watched by 8.27m (31.7%) at 7.30pm.

A further 378,500 saw the episode on ITV1+1 an hour later.

Emmerdale's Christmas Eve episodes was also one of ITV1's most-watched Christmas Eve primetime programmes, with 6.8m (28.8%) seeing Alex Moss's demise at the hands of killer Cameron Murray between 7pm and 7.30pm.

Cameron had previously confessed to Alex that he had murdered Carl King.

A further 188,100 (0.7%) watched actor Kurtis Stacey's shock exit from the rural soap on ITV+1.

Hollyoaks' Christmas Eve episode, airing at 5.40pm, was seen by 640,000 (3.3%), as Barney prepared to admit his feelings to Carmel.

An audience of 321,300 (1.5%) watched the first look of Boxing Day's episode on E4 (+1: 165,400, or 0.7%).
