Call the Midwife fans have reacted to Molly Vevers’s casting on the show, with some describing it as “exciting”.

Vevers will make her debut as Sister Catherine Cantwell in Sunday’s (January 26) episode, with the character described as a “postulant nun preparing for her full initiation into the Sisters of Raymond Nonnatus, and life as a midwife in Poplar”.

After the news was confirmed via the show’s official social media channels, fans took to Instagram to welcome Vevers onto the series, though some expressed confusion regarding the future of Sister Veronica (Rebecca Gethings) and Nancy Corrigan (Megan Cusack).

“I’m sure Nancy will be back as we haven’t seen her get married yet. Be lovely to have a new midwife on the screen though,” wrote one fan, with a second adding: “By far the best show on tv.”

“So excited,” wrote a third fan, whilst a fourth echoed these sentiments as they expressed their joy at a “new sister” being introduced into the show. “Love it” added a fifth fan, whilst a sixth asked if Sister Catherine would be replacing Sister Veronica, stating: "I hope not, her character grew on me so much".

The post also included an interview with Vevers as she took to the set for the first time, with the actor sharing: “It’s been so exciting. I’ve had a very busy first week. I hadn’t seen the set before the first week - I could see [it] from afar as I went for my costume fittings.

“But then I had a little tour and I was just amazed - it’s like a little village. You can turn the corner and walk into a shop or a café and it’s all there. Or walk under the bridge. You can really get lost in it, it’s like a maze… It’s been really cool to see.

“Meeting everybody and getting to know all the sets and seeing all the different spaces, it’s been a lot to take on but it’s also been nice to get into the swing of it. [You] feel like you’re part of the team and joining the family.”

Call the Midwife airs on BBC One and streams on BBC iPlayer.
