"I was completely unprepared"

Young Sheldon star Annie Potts has blasted the decision to cancel the show, describing it as a "stupid business move".

The actor plays Connie 'Meemaw' Tucker on The Big Bang Theory spin-off, which focuses on the childhood of Sheldon Cooper.

The popular CBS sitcom is coming to an end after seven years and is currently airing its seventh and final season – with the last ever episode set to air next month.

Potts has been a familiar face on TV over the years, but in an interview with Variety, she revealed that Young Sheldon was more difficult to say goodbye to than other shows.

"This one was especially hard because I was completely unprepared," she said. "I was shocked. I mean, the No.1 show on Netflix. We're, I think, all [thinking] that people watch on TikTok besides a couple of recipes for pasta. It just seemed like such a stupid business move.

"Forgive me, but I don't know. If a show is starting to drag or lag or have a lack of stories or whatever, then you kind of see it coming. We were totally ambushed by this. I was, anyway."

The cast wrapped filming on the show earlier this month, and Ghostbusters star Potts reflected on how it felt to be finished with the sitcom.

"It's been really, really, really emotional," she said. "I mean, it's been half of Iain [Armitage, who plays Sheldon]'s life, and it's been a tenth of mine, but at 70, that feels significant.

"And, you know, it's a little village that we have, and we've all taken care of each other and raised each other up.

"There will be a grievous hole in my life. There's no question about it. It’ll get easier. Grief does, loss does."

Armitage has previously teased that the upcoming finale will come "full circle", while Zoe Perry, who plays Mary Cooper, said: "I think what you could always expect from the show is obviously the levity, the humour, but also a lot of heart."

Young Sheldon airs on CBS in the US and E4 in the UK.
