Call the Midwife star Helen George has weighed in on her onscreen husband Matthew's absence after the Christmas special.

The BBC series' new season 15 confirmed that Trixie and Matthew Aylward, played by Olly Rix, are still together, though it's unlikely fans will ever see them share the frame again.

Rix departed the show after series 13 as Matthew and Trixie headed to New York. While she has returned to London and Nonnatus House in season 14, he's nowhere to be seen.

"Matthew has to stay in New York until autumn," Trixie told her nurse friends at Nonnatus House in the new episode of season 15. "Jonty's starting pre-prep in Easter, I needed to get him home and settled."

Following the season premiere, aired on BBC One on 11 January, George reflected on the couple going the distance.

"Look, marriages function in lots of ways and we can all think they're strange from the outside but they function well from within," the star said (via Mirror).

To George, having Trixie and Matthew in two different continents allows her character to return to a job she loves at Nonnatus.

"I think it gives us space that she can come back to Nonnatus and do what she wants because she's got this double life of being Lady Aylward but also coming back to the heart of her life and doing the thing that she loves the most, which is midwifery," she said.

"She's able to put on a fancy hat and go to lovely events with Matthew but then also to be cleaning up sick and baby poo."

As the season continues, seeing Trixie and the other nurses being involved in the Women's Liberation movement, it's not clear how Call the Midwife will resolve the off-screen romance.
