7.8m (31.6%) watched at 9pm on ITV as a violent showdown between Rob and Tina ended in tragedy, while 863k (4.8%) caught the episode on +1 an hour later.

While Corrie was ahead in the soap ratings, the climactic episode was down on Monday night's performance, suggesting that the soap was dented by stiffer competition from BBC One's Happy Valley.

Meanwhile, Emmerdale enjoyed its highest figure of the month so far, bringing in 6.18m (33.7%) at 7pm on ITV and 186k (0.8%) on +1 as Declan shocked Charity with his suggestion of trying for another baby.

Facing tough competition from Britain's Got Talent for a second night, EastEnders managed 5.38m (24.7%) at 7.30pm on BBC One as David Wicks suffered a heart attack on his wedding day and Honey Mitchell made a surprise return. BBC Three's repeat screening secured 527k (3.8%) at 10.30pm.

Also airing against Britain's Got Talent, Holby City dipped to 3.56m (15.7%) at 8pm on BBC One.

Hollyoaks appealed to 918k (5.4%) at 6.30pm on Channel 4 as Maxine walked out on Patrick, while E4's first look followed with 750k (4.1%) at 7pm and 105k (0.5%) on +1.

Over on Channel 5, Neighbours entertained 642k (8.5%) at 1.45pm and 785k (5.9%) at 5.30pm, while Home and Away's London storyline continued with 222k (2.9%) at 1.15pm, 578k (3.7%) at 6pm and 392k (2.3%) on 5*'s first look at 6.30pm.

Elsewhere, Doctors also hit its highest figure of the month so far with 1.52m (20.4%) watching at 1.45pm.
