Coronation Street stays on top in Wednesday soap ratings

Coronation Street remained on top of the soap ratings on Wednesday evening (January 8) as Tina McIntyre was left heartbroken, overnight figures show.

The midweek visit to Weatherfield pulled in 8.34m (35.9%) at 7.30pm on ITV and 315k (1.3%) on +1 as Tina packed her bags and left Weatherfield after Peter rejected her. The scenes were not Michelle Keegan's final ones in the role as Tina's permanent exit does not air until much later in the year.

Emmerdale attracted 7.13m (33.4%) at 7pm on ITV as Val took her anxiety out on Eric, adding 165k (0.7%) on +1.

EastEnders dipped to 6.67m (27.2%) at 8pm on BBC One with more drama for the Branning family in an extra Wednesday night episode. BBC Three's repeat screening secured 514k (4.9%) at 11pm.

After EastEnders, the return of Waterloo Road to BBC One entertained 3.41m (14.0%) at 8.30pm as new pupil Gabriella caused a stir at the school.

Hollyoaks interested 1.12m (5.4%) at 6.30pm on Channel 4 as Theresa was finally arrested for Calvin's murder, while John Paul and Finn's dark new storyline brought 796k (3.7%) to E4's first look at 7pm.

Over on Channel 5, Terese's discovery about Paul in Neighbours was seen by 653k (9.4%) at 1.45pm and 878k (5.3%) at 5.30pm.

Elsewhere, the latest episode of Doctors appealed to 1.5m (21.8%) at 1.45pm on BBC One.
