'Coronation Street' ahead in Friday soap ratings with 7.8m

Coronation Street topped Friday evening's soap ratings (September 20) as Hayley's terminal illness storyline continued, overnight figures show.

7.82m (38.7%) watched at 7.30pm on ITV and 209k (0.9%) on +1 as Roy's birthday was bittersweet for the Croppers, while 7.57m (34.0%) returned at 8.30pm and 351k (1.7%) on +1 as Hayley continued to make plans for her final months.

Emmerdale brought in 6.62m (36.1%) at 7pm on ITV with the aftermath of Cameron's arrest, adding 252k (1.2%) on +1.

EastEnders managed 6.32m (29.8%) at 8pm on BBC One as Peggy made her one-off return to visit Phil in hospital. BBC Three's repeat screening secured 399k (2.8%) at 10.30pm.

Hollyoaks interested 806k (4.8%) at 6.30pm on Channel 4 as Darren demanded answers from Jack over his connection to the Roscoes, while an unexpected twist on E4's first look was witnessed by 579k (3.2%) at 7pm.

Over on Channel 5, Neighbours entertained 654k (10.2%) at 1.45pm and 877k (6.4%) at 5.30pm, while Home and Away grabbed 232k (3.6%) at 1.15pm, 645k (4.2%) at 6pm and 311k (1.8%) for 5*'s first look at 6.30pm.

Elsewhere, the latest episode of Doctors claimed 1.34m (21.0%) at 1.45pm on BBC One.
