Hollyoaks favourite Brendan Brady went out on a high on Thursday evening (March 21) as E4's first look screening was boosted by his exit from the soap, overnight figures show.
993k (4.7%) tuned in to E4 at 7pm and 187k (0.8%) on +1 to see if Brendan would survive after being shot by a sniper.
The rating was the second-highest of the year so far for Hollyoaks' E4 first look slot, charting just behind the aftermath of Esther's suicide attempt in January.
Earlier, 990k (5.1%) watched Brendan's dangerous stand-off with police in the traditional 6.30pm slot on Channel 4, while 103k (0.5%) tuned in on +1.
EastEnders was the day's most-watched soap as 7.62m (34.5%) saw Tanya make a move on Phil at 7.30pm on BBC One. BBC Three's repeat screening had 412k (2.8%) at 10.30pm.
Emmerdale appealed to 6.78m (32.4%) at 7pm on ITV and 166k (0.7%) on +1 as Charity confessed her guilty secret to Jai, while 6.48m (28.4%) returned at 8pm and 249k (1.1%) on +1 to see Jai's angry reaction.
On Channel 5, Neighbours entertained 634k (8.8%) at 1.45pm and 942k (6.0%) at 5.30pm, while Home and Away grabbed 774k (4.2%) at 6pm and 396k (2.0%) for 5*'s first look at 6.30pm.
Elsewhere, the latest episode of Doctors was seen by 1.65m (23.1%) at 1.45pm on BBC One.
