Emmerdale topped the soap ratings on Wednesday evening (February 29) but was below the 7m mark, overnight figures show.
Emmerdale pulled in 6.37m (30.5%) at 7pm as Rhona's plans to propose to Paddy went wrong. A further 140k (0.6%) watched on ITV1+1.
Waterloo Road, meanwhile, attracted 4.06m (17.1%) at 8pm on BBC One as Lauren considered her future career.
Hollyoaks managed 986k (5.1%) at 6.30pm on Channel 4 and 142k (0.7%) on +1 as Riley arrived back in the village, while 597k (2.9%) watched E4's first look at 7pm to see the fallout from his return.
Over on Channel 5, Neighbours grabbed 670k (9.7%) at 1.45pm and 1.02m (6.5%) at 5.30pm, while Home and Away mustered 765k (4.3%) at 6pm and 520k (2.7%) for 5*'s first look at 6.30pm.
Elsewhere, the latest episode of Doctors - titled 'House Call' - was seen by 1.54m (22.3%) at 1.45pm on BBC One.
